Welcome to Sports Lit Class!

Dempsey vs. Carpentier was the first million dollar gate.

"The tragedy of life is not that man loses but that he almost wins."- Heywood Broun

Welcome to Sports Lit class for the spring term of 2007. This will be a great class if you like to read and like sports. It will still be a good fit if you like sports, but don't love reading, or if you like reading but don't love sports. If, however, you don't like reading or sports, you are probably in the wrong place and should see your guidance counselor right away. You will be taking a general sports knowledge quiz soon, and if you don't do well, you might rethink taking this class.

There is a lot of reading in this class, but it should be interesting to sports fans (especially boxing and baseball fans) or fans of reading. There is some very good writing here. We are not just going to read boxscores. (If you don't know how to read a boxscore you might also be in the wrong place.)

If you don't do the reading and take the notes you probably won't pass. Come to class with a pen, notebook, and your textbook.

Here is a list of the books we will be reading:

The Best American Sports Writing of the Century- David Halberstam, editor

Ball Four- Jim Boutin

The Natural- Bernard Malamud

The Summer of '49- David Halberstam

The Professional- W.C. Heinz
